First Grade Topics

 

Religion

· May know God, especially His seeking and forgiving love in Christ

· May respond in faith and grow into Christian maturity

· See themselves and others as the reconciled, redeemed children of God and individual members of Christ’s body, the church

· Live happily in peace with God, themselves and their fellow human beings

· Express their joy in worship of God and in loving service to others

Language Arts

Science

· Understand that trees have similar parts such as roots, leaves (needles), a trunk and branches

· Understand that trees belong to the group of living things called plants.  Plants have may parts in common and each part has a specific function enabling the plant to grow and survive

· Understand that plants serve many useful purposes and provide many useful things

· Understand that people change as they grow.

· Understand that animals grow and change in a variety of ways

· Understand that nonliving things, such as the earth, are also changing

· Understand that we can hear sounds and see things because sound travels through the parts of the ear and light travels through parts of the eye

· Understand that vibrating objects make sound and sounds travel from their source in all directions through solids, liquids and gases

· Understand that when light shines on an object, the light can be absorbed, bent or refracted or it can pass through the object

· Understand factors such as wind, air temperature and precipitation can be used to describe weather conditions

· Understand that air, wind and sunlight interact constantly, producing the water cycle that affects cloud formation and weather

Social Studies

1st Grade Teacher Mrs. Cindy Mallory

 

This is Mrs. Mallory’s 18th year teaching first grade at St. Paul.  She previously taught kindergarten at Mt. Morris Elementary school for 2 years and Remedial Reading at Kings Elementary for 4 years.  Mrs. Mallory is a graduate of the University of Illinois and has a Master’s in Education at Rockford College.
